What are the differences between technical and scientific writing?

Table of Contents

We’re often asked what the difference is between technical and scientific writing. The question is reasonable, and while the two types of writing share many attributes (conciseness, flow, and effectiveness), the real difference is, to put it simply, in the application. That is, as Gertrude Stein once said, “A rose is a rose is a rose,” and likewise, effective writing is effective writing is effective writing, regardless of how that writing is applied. It’s important, for instance, in both technical and scientific writing to ensure that we understand our readers, why they’re reading, and what they hope to gain from reading. The principles of effective writing are applicable to both; what really differs is who the readers are, how they’re going to use the document, and what they need/want from the document. Learn how to write more effectively with Hurley Write’s Technical Writing Courses.
