Workshop Description

Engineers are exceptionally adept at figuring things out — except when it comes to technical writing. No shame to our beloved engineers — ask any one of them, and most will admit that their writing skills could use a little TLC.

The good news is that, regardless of their writing ability, engineers can (and will!) get better with the right training. Our course, “Technical Writing Course for Engineers” is designed to do just that. In our customized course (offered virtually or onsite), your problem-solving geniuses will quickly learn to write documents that are targeted, succinct, and concise.

Learning how to write more effective engineering documents just takes an engineer who’s willing to put in the work.

“Studies in engineering education confirm that structured writing workshops help engineers develop clearer documentation, strengthen logical flow, and increase effectiveness in technical communication.” (Study link)

Frequently asked questions

What is the format of Hurley Write's onsite and virtual workshops?

Our workshops are highly interactive and completely customized to your team’s needs. We use micro-learning techniques, hands-on exercises, breakout sessions, and instructor feedback to ensure participants actively apply concepts. The format is designed for engagement and retention, not passive listening, so participants leave ready to use new strategies immediately.

Onsite workshops typically run two to five days, depending on document complexity and how much practice your team needs. Virtual workshops are usually 10 hours split into two-hour segments. Self-paced online courses include modules of about 30 minutes each, completed at your own pace.

Every workshop is customized around your team’s actual documents and writing challenges. We use real samples from your team to build exercises, breakouts, and examples. The training focuses on planning, structure, clarity, and revision, with research-based strategies grounded in readability principles that apply to any document type.

Workshops include multiple opportunities for participants to apply concepts to their own writing. Onsite sessions typically include two to five practice sessions per day; virtual sessions include one per two-hour block. The pace is structured for active learning, with feedback after every exercise so participants improve in real time.

In addition to customized onsite and virtual workshops and self-paced online courses, we offer one-on-one coaching, document review, and our PROS™ Communication Diagnostic. We also help clients build templates, style guides, and reference documents to support consistent writing across teams long after the workshop ends.

Yes. Every workshop is fully customized to your team’s documents, industry, and goals. We’ve trained teams across pharma, biotech, engineering, finance, manufacturing, energy, and technology. Instructors review writing samples before each workshop so exercises, examples, and breakouts match your real-world context.

The PROS Roadmap™ is Hurley Write’s proprietary framework for planning and writing any document. It stands for Purpose, Reader, Outcome, and Strategy. Participants learn to apply these four elements to every document they write, making the planning process repeatable and the final document clearer and more targeted.

Yes. Instructor feedback is built into every workshop format. Onsite and virtual sessions include real-time feedback during breakouts and exercises. Self-paced online courses include feedback options where Hurley Write coaches review submitted writing and provide detailed comments to help participants apply each concept correctly.

Teams typically see fewer document revisions, faster review cycles, clearer writing across roles, and stronger alignment between writers and reviewers. Many clients report measurable reductions in document revision time and improved confidence among writers. Skills learned transfer directly to the documents your team writes every day.
