Some words simply add no value; for instance, a sentence that uses "in order to" uses more words, but isn't a clearer sentence. Compare "In order to test for bacteria, we used…" versus "To test for bacteria, we used…" No difference. Always ask yourself if the words you're using in a sentence are absolutely necessary to convey your meaning. If not, don't use them.
