Frequently Asked Questions

How are your courses different from your competitors’?

Our courses are completely customized to ensure a profound learning experience. Our courses focus on readability studies; that is, what research and science say about how readers read. When your team understands the science behind what makes a document readable, they’re better able to apply writing strategies effectively to a variety of documents long term.

In addition, many of our competitors aren’t up to date on the latest research, which shows that how readers read has changed dramatically over the past few years. Our courses are designed based on the latest research about readability so that your team can write for modern readers.

Our courses incorporate coaching, refresher webinars, and video reminders to ensure that participants remember and can continue to apply the concepts.

What tools do you use to ensure that the training is effective?

When most people  hear “writing course,” they think, “This will be boring and take me away from my real job.”

But our clients tell us over and over again that our classes exceed their expectations and are anything but boring. We create a fun, interactive, effective, criticism-free environment by using

  • Socratic discussion to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard
  • Workplace exercises, examples, and breakouts that focus on helping participants learn best practices for the application of concepts
  • Generic examples to give your team opportunities to apply the concepts in a non-threatening way
  • Micro-learning followed by application
  • The latest research to ensure that your team is writing for today’s readers

Our courses incorporate coaching, refresher webinars, and video reminders to ensure that participants remember and can continue to apply the concepts.

How does Hurley Write customize its workshops?

We customize by analyzing your team’s writing samples and, along with your organization’s stakeholders, design the course based on what we find. The exercises, breakouts, and examples are designed to ensure that your team can apply concepts to documents with which they’re familiar.

  • Exercises: Both generic and company-related examples are used to give participants ample opportunities to apply concepts.

  • Breakouts: The breakouts use samples from your organization so that participants get experience applying the concepts to writing with which they’re familiar. They work collaboratively and then share how they’ve applied the concepts while getting real-time feedback from the instructor.

What can we expect after the workshop?

Your team can expect to complete a Hurley Write workshop armed with a toolbox of tools they can begin to use immediately.  In addition, coaching, refresher webinars, and video reminders ensure that participants remember and can continue to apply the concepts.

Does Hurley Write offer any tools to help with retention?

We certainly do! Our retention program includes face-to-face coaching, refresher webinars, and other tools, which are customized to suit your team’s unique needs.

Can we handle retention in-house?

Writing well requires practice, practice, and more practice, which most of our clients simply can’t handle in-house.  Regular immersion into writing and feedback that supports what participants learn in our workshops is vital in ensuring that they can continue to apply the concepts after they complete the workshop.

Can we choose our instructor?

Absolutely! Our instructors are teaching, coaching, and writing experts, and all have at least a master’s degree. No matter who your instructor is, your team will have a worthwhile, fun experience and learn strategies to be more effective writers, presenters, and reviewers. Learn more about our instructors here.

How are the workshops offered?

Both our virtual and onsite workshops are instructor-led and customized, while the online courses are self-paced and include voiced lectures.

  • Virtual workshops are between 10 and 16 hours, typically broken into two-hour sessions. The benefits of the virtual workshop:
    • It simulates the university model in that participants have time between sessions to apply  concepts
    • Information is presented in smaller chunks, making it more accessible
    • Scheduling is often easier because the time commitment is less

  • Onsite workshops are between two and five days. The benefits of the onsite workshop:
    • Participants are together, which enhances collaboration and  learning
    • Information is presented in smaller chunks, making it more accessible
    • Participants avoid normal distractions associated with workplace activities

  • Online courses are either six or seven modules, each of which takes roughly 30 minutes to complete. The benefits of the online course:
    • Self-paced so that participants can work on it when convenient for them
    • Feedback on writing: each module includes at least three writing options on which participants receive feedback
    • 180-day access to give participants ample time to complete

Both our virtual and onsite workshops include coaching, refresher webinars, and reminder videos, which can be included in our online offerings.
