Pam Hurley, PhD

Pam Hurley, PhD

Pam Hurley, PhD, is the founder and president of Hurley Write, Inc., a certified women-owned small business. Pam started the business for one simple reason: as an academic, she saw her students struggle with their writing. In fact, many of them simply had the attitude that they “couldn’t” write. She knew this wasn’t true but was unsure of how to teach these students anything that would help them, as the textbooks she used certainly weren’t promising.

While in graduate school, Pam was introduced to the concept of readability studies and a lightbulb went off! She knew that these concepts could help her students. And they did. When she started teaching these concepts, students’ writing began to improve, they seemed to struggle less with their writing, and many of them commented on how much easier it was to write.

Pam has been perfecting this notion of readability and applying problem-solving skills to writing and she’s developed a technique that helps professionals solve their writing problems: they write better documents in less time.

Bob Wiltfong

Bob Wiltfong

Bob Wiltfong is the lead instructor for Hurley Write's Presentation Skills curriculum. There's a joke by the comedian, Jerry Seinfeld, that really sums up why we teach what we teach in this field. And the joke is that at a funeral, most people would prefer to be the person in the casket than the one giving the eulogy. It's a funny joke in part, because it's true.

For over 20 years, Bob has worked with business executives around the world helping them perfect their speaking skills and become more comfortable and dynamic speakers. You may recognize Bob from The Daily Show or as the national spokesman for Nationwide Insurance.

Hi, I'm John Willard, executive trainer at Hurley Write. When I did my undergrad studies at the University of Virginia, I majored in English. I thought I would be a teacher, maybe even a professor. I went straight from UVA to graduate school at Rutgers University, where I continued my studies and taught a number of courses in writing. But then my career took a turn and I ended up going into the market research field. I led teams at American Express and at Bayer. And during that time I did a lot of writing. And I believe that it was the skillset I developed as an English major that helped me to be effective in my business life. Now I'm with Hurley Write, helping professionals like you to understand how you can write more effectively. It's not about the rules of grammar, it's about understanding what you want to accomplish when you write something and understanding who your audience is. I'm looking forward to seeing you at one of our workshops soon. Thanks.

Hello. My name is Jeff Mazullo ,and I'm excited to be a Hurley Write trainer. I've worked as an analyst, researcher, writer, and trainer for over 20 years. I began my career as a corporate governance analyst and during the past decade, I focused on the link between sustainability and finance. I have written articles, assessments, presentations, proposals, research, reports, surveys, and training materials for a wide range of institutions, academia, business, government, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations.

I've always been interested in language and in languages. I have worked and lived in eight countries and traveled and worked to over 25 countries. For the past 14 years. I've been an adjunct professor of corporate governance, teaching university students and recent graduates in several Eastern European countries, and I speak several languages. English is my native language, but I speak German and Polish quite well.

So for me, the question is not to read or not to read, or to write or not to write because both are such an important part of my professional life. Instead, the question is how can I write most effectively to a specific audience to achieve a specific outcome? And that outcome should be determined in advance, and I focus on both the process and the end product. So the Hurley right methodology presents a wide range of strategic choices that you can make as a writer, and it provides an opportunity for you to learn and apply practical skills, so that you can also improve both the writing process and the written product. As I said, I'm excited to be a Hurley Write trainer and I look forward to meeting you in the classroom virtually and hopefully soon in person. Thank you.
