I have been very impressed by Pam Hurley's knowledge, presentation, and teaching ability. [Her] courses are useful to people who are interacting with clients, producing documents which may be audited, or using writing skills in their interactions with members of the company. I have attended several writing courses over the past two years, [and] Pam's courses far exceed anything I have attended.

Contrary to popular usage, a colon shouldn't be used after "include" or before a list unless the sentence preceding the list is a clause. Not "The list includes: geese, mice, and lice," but "The list includes geese, mice, and lice."

Effective Technical Writing

Effective technical writing is quite different from the regular writing you learned about in school. This type of writing is used in a variety of business settings, and comes with its own particular set of protocols. Unless you have taken a course on technical writing in college, the chances are good that you haven't had any formal training in it.

If you have to produce technical writing on the job, you may have learned what you know by mimicking the work of others. You may simply be guessing as to what constitutes good technical writing. Even if you've had training, there's always room for improvement. Effective technical writing is all about good communication and smooth flow. The mechanics of grammar play only a small role.
